Fully Automated subsurface drip Irrigation

A 398-hectare subsurface drip irrigation project, commissioned in 2022, introduced state-of-the-art automation and engineering to open-field farming in Ukraine. Spanning eight irregularly shaped fields, the system incorporates advanced pumping, filtration, fertigation, and control technologies—providing efficient, long-term irrigation performance that was once exclusive to greenhouses, now utilized for corn and soy.

RootGuard® is Metzer’s patented anti-root intrusion technology, embedded in the dripper line. It prevents clogging without chemicals and is guaranteed for multiple years.

Most setups start with one lateral per tree row, increasing to two as the orchard matures. Spacing varies by soil type—30 cm in light soil, up to 100 cm in heavy soil.

Metzer systems allow precise fertigation tailored to annual yield predictions. Nitrogen should be limited to 150kg/ha for oil-oriented cultivation.

Metzer recommends PC drippers such as Assif RootGuard®, Adi, and Vered for sloped terrain and long laterals. These offer uniform output and resist clogging and intrusion.

Metzer’s SDI offers long-term reliability, minimizes evaporation and weed growth, and enables easy field access by keeping the surface dry.

It involves up to 2,000 trees per hectare with 1.5–1.75 m tree spacing. It boosts yield and mechanization efficiency but requires precise irrigation and fertigation design.

Modern olive orchards are planted at high density (300–2000 trees/ha), making rain-fed cultivation insufficient. Precision irrigation ensures consistent yield and oil quality.
